Gandhinagar is gradually developing as an urban city. The biggest temple in India and an important pilgrimage center, the grand and beautiful Akshardham temple is a spectacular site, thronged by devotees from all over the country. An intricately carved pink sandstone shrine, it’s set amid spacious lawns, and has exhibitions on the life of Swaminarayan (1781-1830), 3-D dioramas on Ramayana and Mahabharata and a restaurant as well.
The capital city is about 23 km from Ahmedabad. Gujarat and Maharashtra used to be part of the ‘Bombay Presidency’ in colonial times, but in 1960 were bifurcated into two states. When Bombay became the capital of Maharashtra, Gujarat set about planning its new capital.
Gandhinagar is thus entirely oriented to its political-administrative role, with the Central Government Complex at the centre and town planning done according to official needs. Straight roads, neat roundabouts and division into sectors mark the city. The Sabarmati River runs by but more often than not is just a thin trickle.
