Ratnagiri for you. Ratnagiri has a long and interesting history. Starting from the Bijapur rulers who built a fort right in the heartland of this port city, to its seize by the British government. The fort was later strengthened by Shivaji in the year 1670. According to a legend, the Pandavas, during their years of exile, had spent a year in the vicinity of Ratnagiri. The king of that region, Veeravrat Ray had fought the Kauravas in the war at Kurukshetra.
Ratnagiri enjoys a strategic geographical location, with an eclectic mix of pristine beaches, waterfalls and hilly terrains. The famous Ganpatiphule Temple located nearby is a 400 years old temple located on the beach and perhaps there is no other place to soak in natural serenity better than here. The Thiba Palace is notoriously famous as the place of exile for the King and Queen of Burma from the years 1911 to 1916. The palace now houses their tombs. The Jaigad Fort is nestled atop a cliff which overlooks the bay. From here, you can get sweeping views of the confluence of Shastri River and the Arabian Sea.
Also famous for its Alphonso Mango, this place offers delicious fish curry and rice, along with kokam kadi, a digestive drink to do justice to all the spices you consume. The hilltop Ratangiri Fort is a massive U-shaped structure surrounded by sea on all the three sides, now largely in ruins and bedecked in green moss. It makes the perfect setting to see the sun sinking into the sea, with the sound of the waves lashing the hill below. If you are on a romantic vacation with your loved one, be sure to take home locally produced cashews and Amboli.
