Known for being significant to Makar Sankranti, the International Kite Festival or Uttarayan Festival in Gujarat is celebrated as a symbol of ‘Cultural Strength’. It is believed that Makar Sankranti marks the beginning of Summers, with the return of the sun to the Northern Hemisphere; the sun joins the Capricorn zodiac. In other words, the sun transits from one zodiac sign to another. Since, there are 12 zodiac signs, there are 12 'sankrantis' as well. It is also learnt that from this day itself begins the six months long Uttarayan or Makar Sankranti.
