There are many Place to visit in Naldehra but the Naldehra Golf Course definitely tops the list. If you love golf then you’ll never get such a high teeing off anywhere else in the world but Naldehra. It is home to one of Lord Curzon’s best gifts to India: an 18- hole golf course that’s said to be the country’s oldest (1905). Also tucked away here is a tiny Mahunag Temple dedicated to the snake god. That’s where Naldehra gets its name: nag + dehra translates into the “Abode of the King of Snakes”.

Members of Delhi’s Golf Club clamber up here in the summer, lock, stock and golfing clubs in tow. Apart from them, the quiet environs of Naldehra, covered with spruce, pine, plum trees and berries, have largely escaped the trample of tourists. A teeny warning: the view of the snowy Himalayan Range will be blocked for the most part by Shaily Peak and its less impressive sisters.

The game of golf is why you should be here, and if you don’t want to play, you can just walk around the course taking in its smooth undulating grass-scape. Or read the rules, such as: “collarless shirts/ tops must have sleeves and sleeveless shirts/ tops must have collars”!

Things to do in Naldehra: Take long walks through pine-lined roads, excursions to picnic spots or old English-style cottages in the surrounding villages of Baldian, Talli and Durgapur. Kids can enjoy pony rides and picnics. Just before Naldehra falls the village of Baldian.

From here, take the motorable Old Rickshaw Road and head for the local fire station, 6 km away. Next to Baldian sits Craignano, originally the summer resort of the Italian Countess of Craignano. In the 1890s, Craignano was turned into the United Service Club for the British laat sahebs.

Head for Talli, a tiny meadow with the Mahakali Temple, and the estate of the erstwhile Maharaja of Faridkot. Pencil in a trip to the charming Kogi Village, 2 km down a dirt track from Naldehra. Traditionally constructed houses, a temple dedicated to Kogi Mata and a chowka (seat of the elders) sculpted in wood are the worthwhile sights here.

Where to stay and eat

HPTDC’s Hotel Golf Glade (Tel: 91-98100-02772|99100-02772), with its log huts, sits on the prettiest location. There’s a restaurant with large windows and a view of the foothills. This is the ultimate option for golfers. The Chalets Naldehra (Tel: 91-177-2747715| 6940481) is the luxury resort here. There are family chalets, bungalows, apartments, games and facilities.

It also has a good restaurant, great solar-heated pool and a spa. Affable owner, Yatish Sud, helps beginners at golfing. The mountain path behind The Chalets is an easy, lovely hike through dense silent woods. Hotel Rock Heaven (Tel: 91-98166-68169) is a decent option.

Shaily Peak (23 km)

Head out to the Shaily Peak early in the morning, especially if you’re up for some trekking. From Khatnol, the base for the steep climb to the peak, it’s roughly 8 km. You can also hire a pony if you dont want to trek the entire distance.

Tattapani (35 km)

Tattapani, is famously home to hot sulphur springs next to the Sutlej River. Such is the water’s warmth that locals bathe here in the winters. About 4 km past Tattapani, on the climb to Chindi, is a signboard announcing Shivji Ka Gufa. A 2-km detour brings you to a tea stall at Saror. From here, you take the footpath to the ancient, lingam-dotted cave, 750 m away. The cave was discovered in the 1950s. Tattapani is god’s own private resort, with a gentle blue-green river, thick oak and pine forest. Naldehra is therefore good for a quiet retreat in the hills nestled in nature’s lap.

In addition, you would also be pleased to learn that there are many other Places near Naldehra famous for its mass tourist attractions!
