Shoghi is an unassuming, roughly 2-km stretch whose highlights are the warm people and the natural beauty it is surrounded by. It is more than just a cheap, quiet alternative to Shimla— it’s an ideal place to chill. Turn off your phone and listen to the forest when in Shoghi. This is temple country too.

The 360º views of the hills from the top are rewarding. There are two shrines here that are gems and represent the best of local aesthetics. About 6 km south-west of Shoghi, in a valley, is Anji Village. The Hanuman Temple here has beautiful wall paintings of mythological scenes. Kadaur (about 3 km west of Anji) has a Kali Temple atop a grassy knoll. It’s a great spot for a picnic. You can also visit Tara Devi Temple (approximately 11 km south of Shimla).

Where to Stay and Eat

Park Woods Forest Retreat (Contact No.: 91-99538-18074) covers 20 acres of wooded area with huts or tents, indoor plumbing and outdoor activities like trekking or horse riding. There’s a quiet, homely Sunrise Villa (Contact No.: 91-0177-3190075), in a local house in Shoghi. The rooms are clean and well maintained, with astounding views. Hotel Good Luck (Contact No.: 91-177-2860164) is a decent budget choice with nice views.

Getting There

The nearest railhead is Kalka (75 km/ 2.5 hours. from Shoghi. Shoghi is 14 km short of Shimla on NH22 from Ambala. Himachal Pradesh Tourism’s Delhi-Shimla buses drop you off at Shoghi. You could also travel Shimla to Shogi by car if you do not want to have to wait to catch the running bus.

Shoghi is great for a short break with friends and family where one can simply unwind in the hills, with no itinerary planned whatsoever. Hope you have a wonderful holiday here.
