about jabalpur

Fast emerging as a favourite among tourist, Jabalpur is home to the meanderings of the Narmada river. Bhedaghat is a major tourist attraction 25 kms from here, famous for the Chausath Yogini Temple and the Dhuandhar Waterfalls. This temple dating back to the 10th century is devoted to Lord Shiva and has a number of ancient carvings and sculptures. The plunging Dhuandhar Falls in Narmada river are a visual delight, with their rough gushing and smoky cascading waters. When in Jabalpur, do make day trips to nearby places like Roopnath that houses one of the 12 Shiva's Jyotirlingas, or to the Pench National Park to observe the tigers, Leopards and Wolves in the wild.

A small town on the verge of becoming a city, Jabalpur is most known to tourists for the unique marble rocks stretch by the river Narmada. This area was ruled by the Kalchuri dynasty and the tribal Gond Kingdom, passing on to the Marathas and finally the British who made it a cantonment and called it ‘Jabbalpore’. The marble rocks were introduced to the larger world by a Captain J Forsyth: “The eye never wearies of the effect produced by... sunlight glancing from a pinnacle of snow-white marble reared against the deep blue of the sky...”. He was waxing eloquent about Bhedaghat, 23 km from Jabalpur, where the Narmada squeezes herself into a narrow gorge, about 30m wide, carving through the huge white marble formations that loom on both sides. On moonlit nights, it’s spectacular.
