about jain temple

Built possibly as far back as the 13th century, the Jain temple in Sulthan Bathery is a living memorial to the presence and influence of the Jains in Sulthan Bathery. A vibrant, growing community, the presence of Jain settlers lasted over 4 centuries beginning in 12th century when they had migrated to Sulthan Bathery. Steeped in mythology, the Jain temple in Sulthan Bathery is now unfortunately in ruins. Yet much of the temple structure is holding together to let you appreciate its architectural splendour.

Carved entirely out of granite, strong influences of the Vijaynagar architectural style can be noticed. Set on a raised platform the elaborately and painstakingly carved pillars hold the temple's stone roof. Beautiful cornices along the top of the interior stone walls adorn the temple. An open verandah leads into the inner sanctum of the temple where a square shaped granite slab bearing the carving of Mahavir Jain resides. Initially a shrine, the temple eventually became the seat of commercial activity and during the reign of Tipu Sultan, in the 18th century, a place for refuge and storing place for ammunition.
