about jama masjid

In the heart of the old city, in the crowded traffic-ridden centre of Nauhatta, the sudden first sight of the  Jama Masjid’s gracious expanse, its pale stones and tall spires can take your breath away. Originally built by Sultan Sikandar (the infamous bigot Sikandar Butshikan) in 1394, and much enhanced by his son, the popular Zain ul Abidin, the Jama Masjid was damaged by fire thrice, each time being rebuilt by the reigning local sovereign.

It was reduced to ashes again in 1620, and rebuilt by Jahangir and Shah Jahan, only to burn again in 1674. When the news reached Aurangzeb he was more concerned about the chinars in the vicinity, and then went on to build the monument. The most remarkable feature of the masjid are the 378 pillars of devdar wood that hold up the wooden ceiling, beautiful in their uncarved simplicity. The courtyard is a pleasant space constituted by a central fountain, lawns, chinar trees and a backdrop of the Hari  Parbat Hill.

Poorly maintained. Not al at all charming as compared to pictures. Various people sitting there only to take money from you in the name of donations! Look at it from the outside. Take a few pictures and exit!
