about old fort

Old Fort or Jaunpur Fort is a 14th century fort situated on the banks of Gomti river. The fort was built in 1360 by Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq on a mound of an earlier fort called Kerar Kot. The exterior walls of the fort form an irregular quadrangle with main gate towards east. The main gate is around 14 m in height and 5 m in depth. The fortifications were further strengthened and numerous royal edifices added with the advent of Sharqis. Mughal emperors Humayun and Akbar recreated the fort after extensive repairs. Also, there is a mosque within the fort which was constructed in typical Bengal style.
