about javari temple

Built during circa 975 and 1100 A.D. Javari temple is considered to be one of the more beautiful temples in the temple complex of Khajuraho. This temple comes under the Eastern group of temples, overseen by the Archaeological  survey of India. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the Javari temple is quite popular amongst tourist coming to visit Khajuraho. It is a Nirandhara Prasada type of temple, meaning there is no pradakshina around the inner sanctum. The sanctum of Javari temple contains a four armed idol of Lord Vishnu, though it is now broken and headless. Though the brilliant architecture and the intricate carvings all around the interior as well as the exterior walls are impressive, no doubt, a special mention goes to the main archway, which has the 'nava grihas' carved on top with the figures of Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh; and the temple roof which has breathtaking carvings which are so precise they almost impart life to the figures. Javari temple has a long porch which can be entered through a beautiful stone toran. Overall, the temple is quite similar to the Chaturbhuja temple in Khajuraho.
