about jhansi

Jhansi means 'blurred shadows'. This name has been derived from the shadows of the lofty forts built by the Rajputs in the city. Jhansi is part of Bundelkhand, the cultural region of Madhya Pradesh-Uttar Pradesh which was ruled by the Bundela Rajputs since the 16th century. It is an alluring place located in Uttar Pradesh that houses the majestic Jhansi Fort built by Raja Bir Singh in the year 1613 and the Rani Mahal built in 12 CE These places are still intact and preserve the glory of age old history and now have been either turned into museums or maintained as important monuments.

The city is most famously associated with Rani Lakshmibai, the brave freedom fighter of the Revolt of 1857. Situated along the banks of the River Pahluj, Jhansi is often called the "Gateway to Bundelkhand". Originally, the city was walled, but over the years, grew around its fortifications. The stone fort is the crowning glory of the city. The name Jhansi is actually a corrupted version of the original name Jhainsi. According to local legend, the Raja of Orchcha was sitting with the Raja of Jaitpur when he asked the latter if he could see the new fort on Bangara Hill. To this, the Raja of Jaitpur said that he could see it jhainsi (just a shadowy outline). The Jhansi Fort was one of the most strategically built forts of Central India, commanding views of the city. There is a museum here dedicated to the history of Bundelkhand. Here you can find sculptures and artefacts which offer an insight into the city's past. Some of the must-visit places in Jhansi are Laxmi Bai Park, Jhansi Fort, Narayan Bagh and Shrine of St. Jude Church.
