about kannur fort

Also known as the St. Angelo's Fort, Kannur Fort takes you back into the Portuguese era. Built in the year 1505 by Dom Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India, the fort has several interesting tales attached to it. A sneak peek into its history would tell us that the fort witnessed several changes in terms of ownership as the Portuguese (the initial owners) lost their power to the Dutch in 1663 who later sold the fort to Arakkal Royal Family in the year 1772. However, the British went on to become the last owners of the fort and converted it into a major military station on the Malabar coast. Today, it is managed by the state government and Archaeological Survey of India. Due to its beautiful architecture and historical significance, Kannur Fort is a hot favorite among tourists who want to have an interesting glimpse of the both. Overlooking the majestic Arabian sea, the fort promises stunning views of the sweeping landscape and scenic beauty and no wonder, its a photographer’s delight in true sense.

One of the best preserved forts in Kerala!

Kannur Fort has a rich history - trailing to the British Colonial and Pre-British Colonial days of Canannore! It is a pride that the authorities are preserving the fort at its best!
