about karla caves

These beautiful rock cut caves are among the oldest examples of Early Buddhist temple art in India. Ornamented with an arch in the shape of a horseshoe, the entrance to the Karla Caves is grand and splendid. The main cave called Chaitya has 37 pillars with a base structure of a water jar and a charming facade made of wood. The caves were used by Buddhist monks as a spiritual retreat.

Decorated with numerous sculptures, the caves give a peek into the elegant Buddhist art. Promising an enchanting journey, narrow, winding roads will lead you to the craggy caves. If you are not pressed for time, you can also visit the small Ekaveera Temple. Devoted to Goddess Kali, the temple is highly revered by the tribes in Lonavala and nearby regions.
