about kathmandu durbar square

Kathmandu Durbar Square or Hanuman Dhoka Palace Square Complex consists of a huge Royal Square imposing a tremendous variety of temples dedicated to different Hindu gods and goddess. Most of the buildings we see here date from 15th to 18th century.The entire Palace Complex here is named after the Hindu God called 'Hanuman'. One can see a huge stone statue of Hanuman painted all red right next to the main entrance ( the golden gate) of the palace. Hanuman here is regarded as a powerful protector of the entire Durbar Square.

Kathmandu Durbar Square is actually made up of two sub-areas. The outer complex is known for numerous interesting temples such as Kumari Ghar, Kasthamandap, Shiv-Parbati Temple, Jagannath Temple, Big Bell etc while the inner complex comprises the old palace area Hanuman-Dhoka and its courtyards as Nasal Choke, Mul Choke, Sundari Choke, Basantapur Durbar and others. Besides the magnificent temples and shrines, one can also witness various festivals, cultural activities and traditions which people there are following from centuries.

The major festivals at Kathmandu Durbar Square includes Indrajatra, Dashain, Gaaijatra, Machchhindra-nath jatra ets. On these occasions people from all over the city gather to mark their centuries old traditions. All the carving and architecture in this area are exceptionally fine which make the architecture in this Hanuman-Dhoka Durbar square among the most important sights for travelers to see.
