about kozhikode

Calicut ( Kozhikode) or Kozhikode is historically known for welcoming Vasco da Gama, way back in 1498 AD. Amongst its myriad charms, it has a couple of other attractive crowd pullers like the Dolphin's Point and the Kozhikode Beach. As the name suggests, Dolphin's Point is the place to watch frolicking dolphins. Similarly, the Kozhikode Beach is another terrific spot with its ruined old piers, lighthouse, Lion's Park and Marine Water Aquarium.

Much like the many meanings of its name, the town offers many facets. The name derives from the words koyil (palace) and kotta (fort). The city was once surrounded by the fort built by its ruler, the Zamorin, who encouraged trade with the Arabs by giving special concessions. Though the locals called it Kozhikode, for the Arabs it was Kalikat; for the Chinese, Kalifo; and for Europeans, Calicut (Kozhikode). The British then immortalised the name by calling the locally produced cloth ‘calico’.

Originating from Chalippuzha River which diverges into 3 waterfalls, Thusharagiri Waterfalls in Kozhikode are certainly a pleasure to visit. The highest waterfall among the three is Thenpara which falls from a height of about 75 meter from sea level. The winding, narrow roads will take you to this beautiful waterfall and you would be accompanied by serenity and lush greenery throughout your journey.

It is not only a nature lover's paradise, you can also try your hands at rock climbing and trekking while you are here and trust us when we say that it is going to be one of the most memorable vacations of your life. You can also pay visit to the nearby wildlife sanctuary and treat yourself to some rare varieties of flora and fauna.Calicut (Kozhikode) or Kozhikode is historically known for welcoming Vasco da Gama, way back in 1498 AD.
