about kumbhalgarh fort

Kumbhalgarh Fort is considered to be the second most important fort of Rajasthan owing to its strategic location. Grand doorways, seamlessly stretching boundaries, breathtaking views and fantastic local legends - this is just a glimpse of the fort for you. Constructed by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century, under the supervision of the famous architect, Mandan, the very origins of this fort have a unique story attached.

It is said that despite his repeated attempts to construct a fort, the structures collapsed. A tantric then informed the king that the place was under a curse and could be freed only by the sacrifice of a holy man. Eventually the tantric volunteered and was decapitated and the Fort was successfully built. To honour his sacrifice, a temple was built near the Fort's gate.

The Fort complex covers an area of about 36 square km. Kumbhalgarh Fort is also known to be the birthplace of the mighty warrior, Maharana Pratap. The important buildings within the fort include Kumbha Mahal,  Badal Mahal, water reservoirs, gateways, baoris, chhattris etc. It is also home to about 360 ancient temples, close to 300 of which are dedicated to Jain Deities.
