about lama temple (yonghegong)

The Lama Temple , also known as the Yonghe Temple or Yonghe Lamasery is a temple and monastery of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Originally, it used to be the official residence of court eunuchs. But later, it got converted to the residential palace of Prince Yin Zhen( in 1694). In 1723, when the prince became the emperor he had to move to the Forbidden City as per the custom and so the building was converted to a temple. It is located in the northeast corner of the city. The architecture of the temple is unique in itself, with a combination of Han Chinese and Tibetan style artwork. Don’t forget to purchase souvenirs and incense sticks while on your visit to the Lama Temple.
