about larnach castle & gardens

Larnach Castle and Gardens consist of an imposing mansion which is one of the very few houses of this scale in New Zealand. The house and its garden remain open to the public. The gardens are one of only five gardens in the country to have been given the rating of-- "Garden of International Significance" by the New Zealand Gardens Trust.

The castle was built 1871 by William Larnach, merchant baron and politician, for his first wife. It took over three tears and about 200 workmen to build it. Eropean craftsmen spent a further 12 years embellishing the interior. The gardens house many exhibits, making the visit worth your while.
