Lathmar Holi, is one such form of Holi celebration in which people hit with sticks. Not that actual hitting and hurting each other, but a playful celebration. It is celebrated before the actual date of Holi in the neighboring towns of Mathura and Vrindavan. Barsana and Nandgaon, the two neighboring towns of Mathura hold back their tradition to those times when Lord Krishna from his village Nandgaon used to got to Barsana (Radha’s village) to colour her and other Gopis, and they playfully used to beat him with sticks.

Today also, men from Nandgaon go to Barsana to play holi with women and they in turn playfully hit them back with sticks. The Banke-Bihari Temple in Vrindavan also hosts a long holi celebration with its devotees. The priests here shower gulal, garland and coloured water on everyone and to make the atmosphere more lively play bhajans in the background.
