Buddhism, founded in around 5th century BC, is one of the major religions of the world. There are a large number of Buddhist monasteries in India and abroad that are worth a visit. The religion is based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, popularly referred to as "The Buddha". There are more than 500 million Buddhist followers all around the world.

Here is a list of 10 famous Buddhist Monasteries all across the world

Borobudur
Situated on an Indonesian Island, Borobudur is the largest and one of the most famous Buddhist temples in the world. It took a period of 75 years and approximately 2 million blocks for the construction of this structure.

Bagan
Bagan, located on the banks of the mighty Ayerwaddy River, is the largest area of Buddhist temples, pagodas and stupas in the world. It served as the capital of several ancient kings of Burma who built around 4,400 temples here during the height of the kingdom.

Shwedagon Pagoda
The Shwedagon Pagoda, commonly known as Golden Pagoda, is the holiest Buddhist shrine in Burma. It is believed that the Pagoda was built between the 6th and 10th century AD. The 99 meter high (326 feet) high main stupa that is completely covered in gold is the main attraction here.

Mahabodhi Temple

The Mahabodhi Temple is a beautiful Buddhist stupa located in Bodh Gaya, India. The main complex contains a descendant of the original Bodhi Tree and is the most sacred place in Buddhism.

Boudhanath
Located in Kathmandu, Boudhanath is among the largest stupas in the world. It serves as the center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal and is home to many refugees from Tibet. The present stupa was built in 14th century as the previous one was destroyed by the Mughal invaders.

Todaiji Temple

Todaiji is among the most historically significant and famous Buddhist temples in Japan. It was built by Emperor Shomu in the 8th century. It is home to one of the largest Budha statues in Japan and has the world's largest wooden building.

Jokhang

The Jokhang Temple, situated in Lhasa, is among the most important sacred sites in Buddhism. The temple was constructed in the 7th century by King Songtsän Gampo. Spread across an area of about 25,000 square meters, it is flocked by devotees and tourists all year-round.

Pha That Luang
Located in Vientiane, Pha That Luang is one of the most important monument in Laos. The stupa has several terraces in which each level represents a different stage of Buddhist enlightenment.

Wat Arun

Wat Arun, also known as Temple of Dawn, is one of the oldest landmarks in Bangkok, Thailand. The temple is an architectural representation of Mount Meru, which is the center of the universe in Buddhist cosmology.

Haeinsa Temple
Haeinsa is one of the most important Buddhist temples in South Korea. The temple was first built in 802 and rebuilt in the 19th century. The temple’s greatest treasure is the complete copy of the Buddhist scriptures.
