Maha Shivratri is an auspicious night for the Hindus, where Lord Shiva is worshipped. It falls on the new moon day in the month of Maagha according to the Hindu calendar, This year it will be celebrated on February 27th, 2014. According to Hindu mythology, Mahashivratri signifies the night when Lord Shiva performed the dance 'Tandava' that led to the creation, conservation and devastation of the universe. Some say, that this night marks the marriage ceremony of Lord Shiva and Parvati.

People throng to temples to offer prayers and please Lord Shiva. Holy mantras are also recited and special puja ceremonies are held throughout the night. Devotees observe fast and spend the day in devotion and worship of Lord Shiva. Woodapple leaves, cold water and milk are offered to the Shiva Lingam on this day.

Chanting of Shiva Mantras like 'Om Namah Shivaya' or the Mahamritunjaya Mantra using a Rudraksha Japa Mala is also considered auspicious. The fast is broken only the next morning, after a nightlong worship.
