about mahabalipuram

Named after the cruel mythical King Mahabali who was slayed by Lord Vishnu, the city came to prominence with the Pallava dynasty in the 7th and 8th Centuries. An archaeologist's delight, this city boasts a large collection of ornate stone-carvings, made on uncut rocks, which lay scattered in the complex and make it seem like an open museum. Destroyed to a large degree by soil and wind erosion, the magnificient Shore Temple has been recognised by UNESCO for revival and restoration. The prominent carvings, carved straight out of stone are Arjuna's Penance, Varaha Caves dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Mahishamardini Cave dedicated to Lord Shiva, Parvati and Garuda from Hindu mythology. The Tsunami in 2004 exposed several submerged temples and a whole new layer to the history of Mahabalipuram. Take soothing walks amidst green, lush parks and enjoy the fresh sea-breeze coming in from the Bay of Bengal, that runs parallel to the city.

It is hard to imagine that this small tourist-friendly town was once a bustling port-capital of the Pallava dynasty, some 1,400 years back. Mammallapuram, or Mahabalipuram as it was earlier called, was named after ‘Mammala’, a title of King Narasimha Varman I, the Pallava ruler who set up his capital here and established a centre of sculpture and art in the 7th century CE. The striking feature of the sculpture here is that it is all monolithic — giant temples carved from single rocks. The town still harbours those fabulous ancient carved structures, worthy of its UNESCO World Heritage Site status, and made doubly atmospheric by its seaside location. Mammallapuram is also a great destination for a lazy beach holiday, and has all the essential ingredients — sea, sand, sun, souvenirs and seafood. There are plenty of cheap lodges and hotels, but if you want to spoil yourself, then there are many luxurious beach resorts here that you can check into.
