about mahabodhi society of sri lanka

One of the Indian branches of Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka, the Mahabodhi society in Chennai was set up with the aim of providing shelter and assistance to devotees of Buddhism who visit Bodh Gaya every year. Considered a symbol of trust and friendship between India and Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi center also houses the only Buddhist temple in the city where an 18 feet tall idol of Buddha in abhay mudra (standing posture) resides.

A religious and cultural center, a large number of Buddhist cultural performances, lectures, talks and meditation sessions are conducted here on a regular basis. Vesak, the day that marks Buddha's birth, passing away and enlightenment, is celebrated with immense fervour at the centre. Illuminated with lanterns, the centre becomes a hub of activity with prayers, observance, lectures and seminars on Buddhism being conducted. Based on Theravada school, the oldest surviving branch of Buddhism, the centre draws a large number of devotees every year and is one of the few places in the country where not only can you get a glimpse and understanding of Theravada Buddhist teachings but also experience a vivid revival of one the most ancient religions of India.
