Known for being one of the religious festivals of the Jain religion, Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated in India with much zeal and enthusiasm. All the Jain temples are beautifully decorated with flags and lights. This festival majorly observes celebrating the birthday of Lord Mahavira, who was born in Bihar. Also, pilgrims from across the country come here to offer prayers and seek blessings of the Lord. The festival begins with the performance of the ‘Abhishek’ ritual or ceremonial bath.

Post the ceremonial bath, the idol of Lord Mahavira is taken for procession, where devotees assemble in the temple and offer water, milk and fruits to the Lord. In some temples, discussions and lectures are held to further the teachings of Lord Mahavir. The idea behind these discussions is to make people understand the righteousness and real virtues of life.

You will even observe people contributing funds to save cows from getting butchered. The spirit of Mahavir Jayanti celebration can be seen in various cities in Gujarat including Girnar and Palitana. Also, Kolkata observes tourists and devotees visiting the Parasnath temple to witness the magnificence and grandeur of the festivities.
