From the verdant environs of Sarguja’s district headquarters, Ambikapur, the drive to the hill station of Mainpat is just 45 km away. It is the state’s only hill station and its stunning highlands offer tranquil walks, pastoral vistas and spectacular sunsets and sunrises to savour at leisure. A star attraction here is the Tiger Point Waterfall, a huge success with holidaying families. The Machchli Point Falls, Milky Way Falls and Dev Pravah Falls with their picturesque settings too are great for rewarding photoshoots. Mainpat is also home to a migrant Tibetan settlement established here in 1959. Comprising a large part of Mainpat’s populace, the Tibetans nurture the Buddhist Temple they established up here. Visitors can pick up some vibrant handwoven rugs and woollens sold here by the local Tibetan craftsmen. The dense forests, broken by silvery streams and tiny waterfalls, are rich in medicinal herbs and trees. If you head out for Parpatia (west of Mainpat), you’ll get to a viewpoint which overlooks scenic Bandarkot, the Rakamada Cave and the ‘Dulha-Dulhan’ hill tops (a symbol of the spiritual beliefs of the locals).
