about mallikarjuna swamy temple

Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple has a large idol of Nandi, facing the sanctum which presides over a pillared hall. A space has been provided for breaking coconuts near it. Carvings of peacocks and other rich patterns embellish the pillars. The door to the sanctum is silverplated. To its left is the idol of Ratnagarbha Ganapati. To the right are Veerabhadra Swamy (the guardian deity), and Bhadrakali. The small black linga has a hooded golden cover. The garbha griha is small and only priests are allowed inside. To the north of the sanctum, in the prakara, are the five lingas installed by the Pandavas, a temple for Veerabhadra Swamy, and a well from which water is drawn for the pujas.

There is heightened devotional fervour as chants of ‘Om Namah Shivaya ’ fill the air, and the nearly 50m long, orderly and disciplined line inches its way towards the sanctum, constantly monitored by guards. Near the western gopuram, 30m away from the sanctum of the main temple, statues depict the tableau of Chandravati, a legendary maiden whose devotion to Shiva was total. Here she is seen with a garland, worshipping a Shivaling placed on a pedestal. Twenty metres to the north of the sanctum in the  Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple  is another marble statue, depicting Bhramaramba handing over a sword to Chhatrapati Shivaji.
