about mathura

Lord Krishna, associated also with the Mahabharata epic, is considered to be the most compassionate god of Hindu mythology, and is thus revered all across the country. His birthplace in Mathura is a major draw for his followers and devotees, an entire cult surrounding the God and his city. Visitors must see the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the prison cell where the Lord's parents, Vasudev and Devaki were held captive and where Devaki gave birth to Krishna. The main shrine of the city, the Dwarkadheesh Temple, is a major attraction for the devout, particularly during festivals like Holi and Janmashtami. Invaded by Islamic rulers, the city depicts an intriguing confluence of Hindu-Muslim religions in the surrounding buildings and architecture. Must try the special " Mathura ke Pede" for those who have a sweet-tooth.

In addition to religious sites, Mathura has a lot to explore such as Mathura Government Museum and Museum at Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple Complex, both has a good collection of ancient treasures. Walk your way through a dazzling display of ornaments, terracotta sculptures and bronze objects and you’ll be surprised at the depth of the collection here. For a city that packs so much into so little, you’ll see how there’s a delicacy at every stall, each delicacy itself having its own special place where you can enjoy it. There is no particular restaurant culture in Mathura, so you’ll find several small and large dhabas and stalls around the city to choose your feast from.
