about meerut

After archaeologists found the "Vidur-Ka-Tila" in and around Meerut, it has been believed to be the city of Hastinapur, the capital city of the Kauravas and Pandavas from the Mahabharata. It also associated with Ramayana, where one legend suggests that this was the home-town of Ravana's father-in-law, Maya, from whom the city takes its name. One can find Buddhist influences here from Ashoka's reign and excavations have also revealed evidences of Harappan civilisation having existed in this region. But most significantly, Meerut was the epicenter of the First Battle of Independence in 1857, the cantonment area being the site of the first revolt against the Enfield Rifle-Musket. A mere 60 kms from Delhi, Meerut is an ideal getaway destination for those looking for a little piece of history, some shopping and some great North Indian food. Talking about food, Meerut has some really good restaurants which serve lip-smacking dishes from every part of the country and also don’t forget to have a fresh glass of shikanji from Jain Shikanji which falls en route from Modinagar to Meerut. The local market is a bustling, vibrant place with shops selling apparels, trendy footwear and interesting knick knacks and if you are the types who want to go for brand shopping, head to the swanky malls in the city.
