about melbourne zoo

Australia's oldest zoo, Royal Melbourne Zoological Gardens (commonly known as the Melbourne Zoo) was modeled on the famous London Zoo. Today, it has more than 320 species of animals not only from Australia but also from other parts of the world. Visitors here can see the historical cages including the heritage listed Elephant House. It has been now adapted and renovated for people to sleep overnight in tents at the zoo during the famous Roar and Snore evenings. Quite a lot of animals are organised in two bio-climatic zones. One of them is African Rainforest which feature gorillas, pigmy hippos and parrots etc and the other one is Asian Rainforest which feature otters and tigers along with kangaroos and hairy nose wombats, an endangered species.

There is also a Rail Gate entrance at the north of the zoo near Royal Park Railway Station. The recently launched I, Animal is an interactive experience that takes the adults only visitors on a unique journey through the interiors of the zoo at night. Yeah! That's the specialty; it's a night tour. The visitors are told stories about the animals at the zoo after which the participants share their experience over an open fire toasting some tasty marshmallows. You can book for the same by contacting the officials there. The Seal Exhibit here is also an attraction in itself as there are very few zoos with such an exhibit. More and more exotic animals are being procured every year for the zoo increasing the amount and the quality by a dozen of layers in one go.
