about museum of old and new art

Located near the banks of Derwin River, the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart is one of the most unusual and controversial museums of the world. Privately funded by a Tasmanian mathematician, art collector and billionaire, David Walsh, the museum has become extremely popular since its opening in January 2011.

The uniqueness of the museum begins with its entrance where the usual high archways and historical architecture are replaced by a synthetic tennis court and an ordinary doorway leading to a basement. The museum houses some of the most bizarre collection of artwork revolving around sex, death and evolution. These objects and masterpieces are interesting, insightful and sometimes plain shocking! There is also a collection of rare antiquities from Walsh’s private collection including a 1,500 year old Egyptian sarcophagus.
