about nagercoil

Named after the principle shrine of Nagaraj (or the snake-God) in the city, Nagercoil is a small, unassuming city in Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, harking back to legendary tales of his birth.  Interestingly, it is believed that the temple must have been a Jain place of worship owing to the presence of icons of Jain tirthankaras Mahavira and Parshwanatha. Rich in a royal legacy from the Travancore period of rule, the city also hosts Catholic and Protestant churches which highlight the advent of Christian missionaries in India.  You will find a harmonious amalgamation of cultures here, namely Hinduism, Jainism and Christianity.

Situated in the southernmost point of territorial India, i.e., Kanyakumari, Nagercoil enjoys nature's bounty. From lush green fields to verdant hills, gushing waterfalls and pristine beaches -- Nagercoil offers a peaceful retreat. Nagercoil benefits from its proximity to Western Ghats, with a hilly landscape and cool, temperate climate. For the historically inclined, there are two forts in close proximity to Nagercoil. The Udayagiri Fort, built in 17 CE, used to serve as a prison for prisoners captured by Tipu Sultan. The massive granite structure is situated atop an isolated hillock. The Vattakottai Fort is a seaside fort and a popular tourist spot.

The foodie in you won't be able to resist the innovative, soul-satisfying cuisine of Nagercoil. Stews and fish curries dominate the food map, with raw coconut and jack fruit being dominant flavours. Enjoy a blend of Tamilian and Keralite cuisine, unique to this region of the country. The specialty drink, Panakam, is prepared by mixing jaggery, cardamom, dry ginger powder, pepper, lemon juice, basil leaves and salt in water. The cuisine is light on the stomach, but makes for a hearty meal.
