What is the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Festival and Yatra in Uttarakhand all about?

0 people found this answer useful Useful ?Yes

Uttarakhand plays host to many interesting festivals and yatras; one of the most famous is the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Festival and Yatra.

Nanda Devi Raj Jat Festival:

The Nanda Devi Raj Jat festival is celebrated annually throughout Garhwal and Kumaon - two of the most famous places in Uttarakhand. The festivities commence with the auspicious day earmarked for Devi's visit to her maiti (parents’ home) and culminate with her departure back to her husband’s home. This tradition is beautifully portrayed in the folk songs sung by the women of Uttarakhand.

Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra:

An annual yatra, called the Chhoti (small) Jat Yatra or the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, is celebrated every year around end-August or early-September, which starts from Wan and ends at Bedni Bugyal. This is one of the things to do in Uttarakhand when you are there; (around the time of the festival). Once in 12 years, this festival is transformed into a magnificent 21-day journey guided by a four horned ram which leads yatris to Shiva’s home at the base of Trishul. This is the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, the royal pilgrimage. It was last held in the year 2012, when an estimated 50,000 people undertook the arduous journey.
