about new market

Established in 1874, New Market was an upscale market built for the Calcutta British residents. Since Sir Stuart Hogg, the then chairman of the Calcutta corporation, had a major involvement in the whole process, the market was called Sir Stuart Hogg Market after him, which today is shortened to Hogg market.

Today despite the city being flooded with many American styled malls, the market remains a core shopping area for the locals. More than 200 shops present within this complex sell everything like clothing, electronics, luggage and even a rare cheese that is found nowhere else in the city. There are several renowned confectioners and bakeries in New Market like Nahoum & Sons which still retain the original mahogany cabinetry and marble counters.

Although it is known as new market, but it is oldest market of Kolkata. It is situated at Lindsay street. It is a perfect place for shopaholics. Here you get everything you desire for. It is a very busy and crowded market of Kolkata.
