about observatory hill

The Observatory Hill is one of the most ancient sites in Darjeeling. It is locally known as “Makal-Babu-Ko-Thaan”. Legend has it that a Red Hat Buddhist Monastery named Dorje Ling, or 'place of the Thunderbolt' once stood at this very spot.

The place was destroyed by the Nepalese back in 19th century. The Mahakal Temple atop the hill is a highly revered place for the locals. One amazing thing that you can observe in this temple is a Hindu priest and a Buddhist monk sharing a common altar.

It is located close to the Chowrasta and offers the best, spectacular views of snowcapped peaks, including the majestic Kanchenjunga ranges in the far distance.
