Holi- the festival of colours is celebrated all over India with great zeal and exuberance. The festival that approaches in spring season is the mark of fertility and harvest. It is celebrated every year in the month of February or March. On this day, people apply colours to each other to celebrate oneness. There is legend behind the origin of festival of Holi that goes like this:

There is a famous legend behind the origin of festival of Holi. Once there was a cruel and egoistic king, Hiranyakashyap, who ordered his people to worship him as God. His son, Prahlad, was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu and refused to worship his father. This made Hiranyakashyap very angry and he decided to reprimand his son. Holika, his demon sister, also played a sinister role in it. She was granted with immunity from fire. So she coaxed her nephew to sit in fire with her. What she wasn’t aware of is the boon only worked when she entered the fire alone. As a result, Holika was burnt to death and Prahlad was saved because of his unbroken chant to Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap was also killed by Lord Vishnu. The moral behind this legend is that good triumphs evil. Those who seek to torment the faithful will be destroyed. Hence to celebrate this legend, people set a bonfire every night before Holi to enact the legend. On this day, various Holi celebrations in India are organized with DJ and music fests.

There is another story behind the origin of Holi that is associated with Lord Krishna. Krishna, who had dusky complexion, was jealous of Radha’s fair complexion and beauty. So his mother Yashoda asked him to put color on Radha’s face. Mischievous by nature, Krishna out colour on Radha’s face making her like himself. Ever since then, this concept of Holi has been kept alive in Mathura, Vrindavan and Nandgaon enacting Rasleela on the occasion of Holi. Holi in Braj is one of its kind celebration.
