about pench national park

Located in the southern reaches of the Satpura hill ranges, this wildlife sanctuary is situated in an area that holds a significant place in the natural history of Central India. Pench National Park derives its name from Pench river, that flows through the reserve and divides it into two nearly equal parts. The area in which the reserve is situated is known for its rich flora and fauna and has appeared in many wildlife books dating back to 17th century.

The Pench National Park sprawls over an area of 758 sq. km. with a forest belt that extends in three directions, covering the forest tracts of Balaghat, Seoni and Nagpur districts. A dam has been constructed on the Pench river on south-eastern boundary of the reserve. The area is criss-crossed by a lots of seasonal streams and nalas. Even though the Pench river dries up by end of April, still a number of water pools, locally known as dohs, are found serving as waterholes for wild animals along with a few perennial springs.

The varied fauna of the reserve includes 164 species of birds, 33 species of mammals, 10 species of amphibians, 50 species of fish, 30 species of reptiles, and a wide variety of insect life with common ones being leopard, dhole, jungle cat, small Indian civet, Wolves, Striped hyena, sloth bear, jackal, common palm civet, Chital, sambar, gaur, nilgai, wild pig, barking deer and chowsingha. While the rich flora of Pench National Park includes trees like Madhuca indica, Miliusa velutina, Terminalia tomentosa, Lagerstroemia parviflora, Buchanania lanzan, Ougeinia dalbergoides and Lannea coromandalica.
