Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday said if trains get delayed on a Sunday by 5-6 hours due to planned maintenance work on tracks, then Indian Railways will provide free meals to passengers on board.
Goyal also said maintenance of tracks will be taken up for about 2 hours on weekdays and for about 6 hours on Sundays when the volume of traffic is much lower.
And wherever possible, the safety-related works will be done during planned stoppage of trains.
A new line will be laid in Uttar Pradesh between Allahabad and Mughalsarai to deal with congestion.
“The Railway Board has approved the new line between Allahabad and Mughalsarai at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore. This will be completed in 3 to 4 years,” he added.
Railways will come up with a new timetable on August 15 that will inform all passengers about the likely delay in schedule of trains due to the planned maintenance work on tracks.
