about plaza mayor

Plaza Mayor, dating back to 1619 CE, is among the most famous of Madrid’s stately plazas. Earlier it lay outside the city’s bounds and was used to host bullfights. The three sides of this rectangular cobblestone plaza are bordered by block-long rows of three-story apartments completed in the late 18th CE. The structures are decorated with frescoes, have balconies framed with wrought-iron railings and topped with elegant slate spires. In the middle of the plaza there is a statue of Philip III on horseback, which is a major attraction. Facing the plaza is the famous Casa de la Panadería that has a tourist information center.
