Abhishekam or in other words "Bathing the Lingam" is considered to be the most important ritual performed in Sri Kalahasti Temple, one of the frequented temples in Tirupati. Also, this ritual is counted as a part of daily practice, where idols Lord Shiva (Sri Kalahasteeswara Swamy) and Goddess Gnana Prasunambika are bathed with milk and camphor, four times in a day. During the ‘Abhishekam’ sacred threads, flowers and sandal paste along with other things are offered to the Lord. The ritual relates to the act of cleansing and praising the Lord for his blessings. It is interesting to note that the Lingam (main deity) is not touched by any human hands.

Bathing the Lingam is a paid seva and many pilgrims participate in the seva to get the blessings of the Lord. Not many of you would know that you can actually perform various kinds of Abhishekams in the temple; these include Palabhishekam (INR 100), Panchakarpur(Camphor) Abhishekam (INR 100), Rudrabhishekam (INR 100) and Panchamrutha Abhishekam (INR 300). Also, there are specific timings for performing the ritual: Morning: 7:30AM, 9:30AM and 10:30AM; Evening: 5:30PM; Fridays: 4:30AM onwards. And, in case you are through with the 'Abhishekam' ritual on time, you can explore some of the places around Sri Kalahasti Temple. Religion tourists can pay a visit to many religious places. Better book a hotel in Srikalahasti in advance for a relaxed and comfortable pilgrimage.
