The railway budget of 2015-16 was presented in Parliament by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today. Here are the main highlights of the railway budget that affect travellers:

Passenger fares not increased
With no increase in fares, the new budget has spared passengers from a fare hike.

A new record investment
The government plans to invest INR 1 lakh crore in this budget.

Wi-fi connectivity
Wi-fi to be available at 400 railway stations.

Book tickets four months in advance
Tickets can be booked 120 days in advance instead of 60 days to tackle tout menace.

Better provisions for women safety
CCTVs to be introduced in select trains and suburban trains to ensure better provisions for women safety.

Paperless ticketing
Hand-held devices for ticket checkers for moving towards paperless ticketing.

Procure a ticket within 5 minutes
Passengers travelling unreserved can procure a ticket within 5 minutes.

Provision for new toilets and bio-toilets
7,000 toilets to be replaced by Bio-Toilets. Installation of new toilets at 650 stations with more vacuum toilets.

Better display of railways schedule
A centrally managed railway display network in over 2,000 stations to be provided in the next 2 years

More general class coaches
More general class coaches will be added to select trains to make travelling more convenient for the common man.

No new trains announced
This year’s budget hasn't announced any new trains to be introduced this year.

Train sets to be introduced

Introduce train sets to save 20% of journey time. They are similar to bullet trains in design and can run on existing tracks.

Faster passenger trains
The speed of passenger trains across nine corridors will be increased to 160-200 km from the existing 110 km.

A/C coaches for suburban trains
Air-conditioned coaches will be introduced for suburban trains.

10 satellite railway stations to be developed
The budget promises to develop 10 satellite railway stations this year.

E-catering introduced in 108 trains. Passengers can order on IRCTC website.

Charging stations in general coaches
Mobile charging stations will be introduced in general class coaches.

Emphasis on cleanliness
Plans to improve cleanliness and design of bed linen as well as provisions for clean drinking water.

A 24/7 helpline
All India 24x7 grievances helpline to start soon.

Mobile app to be developed
Mobile application to address complaints of people is also being developed.

Integrated ticketing
Introduction of integrated ticketing will be done

Better connectivity to North-Eastern states

The government promised to provide better connectivity to the north-eastern states of India.
