about ramghat

One of the most frequented places in the Chitrakoot town, Ramghat is essentially an embankment built on the banks of the Mandakini river, with long stretches of steps running along it. It was believed that Rama, Sita and Lakshman used to take bath here, during their stay at Chitrakoot. Moreover, it is also a common belief that the famous poet, Tulsidas, met Lord Rama at Ramghat and composed the Tulsi Ram Charit Manas sitting here. Today many devotees throng to this place to take bath in the holy waters or to perform various ritualistic ceremonies. The holy Sarayu river is also thought to surface at Ramghat from its underground sources and after a distance, it disappears again. You will come across many ascetics and yogis sitting on the steps. There is a constant rhythmic chanting of hymns and prayers which is quite soothing to the ears and creates a very pure and sacred ambience. In the evening, aarti is performed by the priests and numerous lamps are lit, which creates a magical vista against the backdrop of the calm waters of the Mandakini. A number of sacred ashrams are located close to Ramghat.
