about red hills

The lakes are abundant, the forests magnificent, the foliage dense, the air pure, small rivulets dance by, and flowers bloom. Red Hills puts the magic back into jaded Nilgiri holidays. The British named the area in remembrance of a similar area in England. Eight lakes form the beauty spots here: Emerald, Avalanche, Upper Bhavani, Parson’s Valley, Porthimund and Western Catchments 1, 2 and 3. The area gets heavy rainfall in June-August, which fills the lakes. And the beauty is pretty much guaranteed, as no further development is allowed in the ecologically fragile Upper Bhavani Sanctuary nearby. In Avalanche live one of the oldest tribes of the Nilgiris, the Todas. Less than 1,000 are left today. Primarily cattle breeders, they would barter ghee and butter for grain in the old days. Their semi-rounded bamboo and cane huts, revered long-horned buffaloes, typical shawls and jewellery, songs and legends, customs such as elders blessing youngsters by placing their foot on the latters’ heads are fascinating.
