about ross and smith islands

Ross and Smith Islands are the twin islands in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, joined together by a natural sandbar.  Only a short 15 minute ride from Port Blair, these islands were the home of the indigenous Great Andamanese who dwindled from 5,000 to just 28 within 20 years of the initial British occupation.

Ross Island served as the capital from 1858 till 1941, when it suffered through the damages caused by a massive earthquake and attacks by the Japanese. Today, it is one of the most frequented travel spot. The ruins of the church and the Chief Commissioner’s house, now taken over by jungle vines and aerial roots, are the most evocative of the remains. You will also come across some machine gun nests left behind by the Japanese.

Satiate the wanderlust in you by visiting the small cemetery and museum built here at Ross and Smith Islands. Ferries will take you across from the Aberdeen Jetty and bring you back after an hour’s stay.
