about rumi darwaza

Standing to the west of Bara Imambara, Rumi Darwaza stands tall in spellbinding magnificence. Constructed by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784, it is a symbol of the Awadhi style architecture. This architectural marvel is also known as Turkish Gate and is one of the most visited spots in Lucknow. At a surprising 60 feet, the grand structure comprises of a 'chhatri' or an umbrella that can be accessed by a fleet of stairs. One of the finest gateways built in Lucknow, it is also the inspiration for a similar gateway in IstanbuI. During the bygone Nawabi era, a huge lantern was placed on top, enveloping the entire monument in pristine light. With little spurts of water surging from innumerable fountains, it was considered to be a breathtaking sight, taking forward its historic glory even today.

From Indo-French to Awadhi you'll get to see all sorts of architecture here. Go to this place only if you are taking full ticket ( Imambara + rumi darwaza, otherwise can avoid.
