about sainte-chapelle

Built way back during 12th century, more precisely in the year 1248, Sainte-Chapelle still stands tall with its glorious history and magnificent architecture. It is said to one of the biggest achievements of the Rayonnant era and no wonder is wrapped in interesting historical tales. Taking a look at its history would tell us that Louis IX of France commissioned its construction as he wanted a place where he can house the collection of Passion Relics, which also includes Christ's Crown of Thorns, Image of Edessa as well as 30 other items pertaining to that era. It served as an important seat for the king as well as his descendants for a long time to come since its inception days.
The Gothic style building is an architectural masterpiece in itself with its gorgeous exteriors and lavish interiors. It is placed upon a lower Chapel which was a Parish church for the people who lived in the royal palace. You will be greeted by ceremonial staircase, crocketed gables, huge windows divided by bar tracery and deep buttresses when you enter the Chapelle. The interiors are beautifully adorned by stained glass windows which are all colorful and nicely decorated along with a delicate framework. The main building was renovated and restored several times during the 19th century and what you see today is a beautiful historic monument which is a national treasure
