about trekking at sandakphu

Trekking at Sandakphu is the only way to reach Sandakphu. At 3630 m above the sea level, Sandakphu is the highest point in the state of West Bengal. It is a part of the Singalila Ridge, that marks the border between India and Nepal. This region is only accessible via trekking. It usually takes 2-3 days from the Maneybhanjan village in Darjeeling district to reach Sandakphu and Phalut (the 2nd highest peak in the state). The actual trek takes just over 12 hours, but trekkers usually prefer to explore and stopover at the quaint little villages of either Meghma, Tumling and/or Kala Pokhri. The trekking route takes you through the Singalila National Park, where one can catch a sight of the Red Panda, Yellow-throated Marten, Himalayan Black Bear, Yak, Clouded Leopard, Takins, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Blood Pheasant, Old World Babblers and Satyr Tragopan.

This is the most favoured trek on the Eastern Himalayas, because of the magnificent vistas of the Kanchendzonga (popularly known as Kanchenjunga) and Everest, along with the seasonal blooming of vibrant Himalayan wildflowers dotting the landscape and vast birding opportunities. The real adventure lies in this whole journey. The feeling after reaching the peak is quite indescribable. No picture, however great, can do justice to the real view.

The trek from Sandakphu to Phalut is the best one, where you get some amazing views of the world's highest peaks. Warning: There are no water sources available on this stretch, so make sure you carry plenty of your own.
