about siddhivinayak temple

Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Shree Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai attracts hundreds of devotees each day. The glory of the temple is mostly due to the visits paid by the politicians and film stars in the city. The temple receives millions of rupees each year as donations, making it the richest temple in Mumbai.

Established in 1801 by Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil, Shree Siddhivinayak Temple began as a humble shrine. With time and money, the present shape of a grand 6-storyed structure came into being. Since Deubai was childless, she wanted to set up a Ganesh temple where the lord would grant children to childless couples. Siddhivinayak is hence well known as Navasacha Ganapati (Ganapati who grants wishes when asked with a pure heart).

The idol of Ganesha was consecrated by Ramakrishna Jambhekar Maharaj who, on instructions from his guru, buried two divine idols in front of the main Ganesh idol. As predicted by him, two decades later, a Mandar tree grew from that spot bearing a swayambhu (self-arising) image of Ganesha.
The main shrine of Siddhi Vinayak is placed in a small mandap. Riddhi and Siddhi are on his either sides, symbolizing fulfillment, holiness, wealth and prosperity. Sometime in 1952, a Hanuman Temple was built into the temple complex. Inspired from the Ambernath Temple, the Shree  Siddhivinayak Temple is a unique 6-storeyed multi-angular temple with a central gold-plated dome. The main stones used were pink granite and marble.
