about shree thaker bhojanalay

It continues to be a winner. As the book goes to press, I dash in for a revisit with two high-flying vegetarian gourmets. Poonam and Ajay Shah (who have generations of maharajs in their home kitchens) and they are thrilled with the authentic pure-vegetarian, unlimited Gujarati (there is dal-bati-churma also) here. Brave traffic-choked streets and elbow past stray dogs and grimy, gunny sacks to get to this Gujarati Thali place in the heart of Girgaon. It is worth it because of the superb, piping-hot Gujarati food in cool air-conditioned comfort. A leap from its earlier non-air-conditioned, dusty (but still wonderful) avatar, the first-floor eatery (with regular tables and chairs and no benches) exemplifies the thali experience like a dream sequence. Waiters scamper around at high speed, serving crunchy, airy, soft, moist farsaans, including outstanding dhoklas (including Palak Dhokla). Colourful chutneys dot the thali (superb garlic one) and so do silken Kadhi and delightful Dal. The buttery biscuit, named Bhakri, was as superb as ever and the Puran Poli plump with sweetness. Ghee drizzled on the rice adds to its flavour and the Dal is as mellow as it always was. The menu changes daily. Look for Undhiyu in the winter, Aam Ras in the summer and Khasa Kachori, Dahi Vada as well as Kesar Jalebi anytime. The Regular Thali in Gautam Purohit's family-run eatery is for Rs.250 on all days, except for Sundays, when it is priced at Rs.350.rnP.S. Do remember that this Bhojanalay is closed on Sunday evenings.rn

The place for Gujju food
Jun 28 2014
The effort of tracking this place in the crowded lanes of Kalbadevi is sure worth it. Thefood is clean, hygenic, authentic and super tasty....Definitely beats the hordes of joints that claim to provide Gujju Thali. Nothing beats this one.... Just go ...... read more
