how to reach simtokha dzong

Bhutan’s only international airport is in Paro, about one and a half hour away from Thimpu. From Paro airport, Thimphu-bound taxis are easily available. Thimpu is connected to most parts of Bhutan by roadways. It has a city bus station from where inter-district buses depart and arrive at every hour. The dzong is located on a prominent ridge on the Thimpu valley. The Simtokha is located about 5 km south of the Bhutanese capital of Thimphu. You can use public transport or book a private cab to reach this destination.

about simtokha dzong

Simtokha Dzong, also commonly known as Sangak Zabdhon Phodrang, is said to be the oldest surviving fortress in the region. This structure was constructed in the year 1629 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, who unified Bhutan. It has been refurbished now after being attacked several times in the 17th century. The structure is now home to one of the premier Dzongkha language learning institutes. The institute is open to both monks and common people. Students who graduate from this institute primarily become Dzongkha teachers.
