What are the highlights of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics?

The Sochi Olympics this winter are just around the corner. After much controversy and debate the Olympics will be held from 7th to 23 February 2014 followed by the

Winter Paralympic Games from 7th to 18th March 2014. Sochi has from now and again been criticised for its environmental and economic issues, lack of political stability, governance, safety and human rights of people. However the city has managed to put together an elaborate setting for the Winter Olympics just in time with what are believed to be state of the art facilities. The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics will be the first Olympics in the Russian Federation since the breakup of the USSR in 1991.

15 winter sport disciplines consisting of 98 sport events will take place as part of the games. Some of these sports are new to the Olympics. Some events will also be held in the resort settlement of Krasnaya Polyana. The Sochi Olympic Park which was specially constructed for the games will act as the centre for the games. It will be used for the Games opening and closing ceremonies, hockey, skating and curling competitions, and all medal award ceremonies.

The selection process for the determination of the mascot for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics was also a unique one. For the first time in the history of the Olympics the mascot was chosen through a public vote. The mascot was revealed to the world on On 26th February 2011 and it consisted of a polar bear, a European hare, and an Amur leopard.

The telecom and transport infrastructure has been enhanced remarkably by the city with a new terminal now functional at the airport. The various sports venues and new hotels to accommodate guests are also up and running. Tickets for the various games will range anywhere from RUB 1000 to RUB 15000.

Despite all the controversies, either simply for the sake of the sports or with the intention of discovering a new city and country, a trip to the Sochi Olympics this winter could totally become an experience to remember.
